Network Services

What is Network Services?

As NESO, it’s our job to keep the grid stable at all times so we can deliver safe and reliable electricity. We’re also preparing to operate at zero-carbon by 2025 as part of the UK’s net zero target for 2050.

So we’re looking for solutions that will allow us to operate an electricity system which will carry increasing amounts of energy generated from renewable and low carbon sources. The overarching programme that looks for these solutions is Network Services (NS).

Our Network Services Categories

There are three categories of Network Services, each designed to solve specific challenges on the GB electricity system

Voltage Network Services

Finding solutions to regional voltage management issues on the electricity transmission network.

Stability Network Services

Addressing our inertia and short circuit level needs at key locations across GB.

Constraint Management Intertrip Service

Resolving network constraint issues and lowering balancing costs.

What is Network Services trying to achieve?

Ultimately, we want to ensure we have the tools to safely and reliably operate a zero carbon electricity network while keeping costs down for consumers.

The Network Services programme opens up competition allowing industry parties to offer solutions to help us meet system needs identified through our network studies. This is done in collaboration with our development and use of new markets through which we procure services to reflect our evolving needs.
