Great Britain’s energy explained: January

In January, gas was our largest source of generation, providing 38.3% of Great Britain’s electricity. Wind came second at 26.7%.

Zero carbon sources accounted for 43% of our electricity, peaking at 87% on 1 January at 6am.

On 1 January, electricity was generated at its lowest carbon intensity of 35 gCO2/kWh at 11am. Carbon intensity averaged at 168gCO2/kWh for the month.

The largest share of our gas came from UK and Norwegian gas fields at 61% with Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) imports providing 22%, storage withdrawal 13% and European imports delivering the remaining 4%.

Distribution networks transported 69% of our gas to homes and businesses. Power stations used 20% to generate electricity.
