Great Britain’s energy explained: February

In February, gas was our largest source of generation, providing 32.6% of Great Britain’s electricity. Wind came second at 31.5%.

Zero carbon sources accounted for 48% of our electricity, peaking at 78% on 24 February at 4:30am.

On 24 February, electricity was generated at its lowest carbon intensity of 43 gCO2/kWh at 1pm. Carbon intensity averaged at 147 gCO2/kWh for the month.

The largest share of our gas came from UK and Norwegian gas fields at 62% with Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) imports providing 29%, storage withdrawal 7%, and European imports delivering the remaining 2%.

Distribution networks transported 69% of our gas to homes and businesses. Power stations used 18% to generate electricity.
