Connections 360

Connections 360 has been developed to provide data transparency and customer self-serve, enabling the improved quality of connection applications. This digital tool with facilitate a reduction in duplicate/speculative applications and will drive offers more aligned with requested dates.

The application delivers the following high-level functionality:

  • Search for specific high or low voltage connections sites
  • Apply filters to find best fit connections sites, appropriate for a potential connection application
  • Toggle with network lines and boundaries to better understand the electricity landscape
  • Explore high-level properties of connection sites
  • View contracted projects (by site) to see network capacities

In time, we’d like to evolve this tool to give developers (and the public) more information about electricity network infrastructure and network capacity to further assist in the connections process.

Connections 360 is best experienced via your laptop or desktop computer.

Application development

Connections 360 will serve stakeholders across the GB energy industry, including developers with new or existing electricity projects.

The first version of Connections 360 was launched in Autumn 2024. This marked the start of a digital journey to visualise transmission connections, enabling/ reinforcement works and contracted capacity on the network.

The Connections team hopes to leverage feedback and insights from users to support the continuous development of this tool. Within the application, users can provide feedback and suggestions.

NESO will work with network companies (Transmission Owners and Distribution Network Operators) to harness technological data, and insights about the energy landscape to drive value through the tool.

Disclaimer:

The Connections 360 application has been designed to provide insight regarding connection sites within Great Britain to enhance the transparency of connections data and to help inform customers prior to the submission of connections applications or contractual amendments.

Data references:

The Connections 360 dataset includes (signed) project information and substation and GSP properties.

For connection sites, information will be visible in the tool once (a) NESO acquires the locational data (b) NESO undertakes internal checks to review the whereabouts of the site.

For project data, the tool only visualises contracted projects. Newly contracted projects will be incorporated as processed in NESO business systems.

Data source Description
Network Company Data
  • Uses data from (a) SPEN (b) SPEN Generation Heat (SPEN Data Portal)
  • Uses data from (a) NGET (b) NGET Connect Now Research Assistant
  • Uses data from (a) SSEN (b) SSEN Network Map
NESO Data Portal Uses externally available data from the NESO portal (GIS Boundaries for GB Grid Supply Points)
NESO Internal Uses pre-existing Connections Site data held by NESO
OpenStreetMap Uses data from OpenStreetMap; uploaded into Connection360. Applied filters on object and file type to identify Substations and Grid Supply Points.
