NESO’s Technology Advisory Council (TAC) advises NESO on its digital, data and technology related innovation and transformations, including cross-industry initiatives.
TAC is made up of a diverse range of experts with significant experience in technology and transformation, including participants from network companies, market participants, consumer groups, academia, and technology companies. It ensures we work closely with the industry on the development of new systems and provides transparency and accountability for their development.
Group members are selected from both inside and outside the energy sector, to ensure a wide range of interests are considered.

Eric Brown
Independent Consultant in energy systems, Grid Scientific Limited and Chair of the TAC
Eric is an independent consultant in energy systems, working through his company, Grid Scientific Limited. He is also Professor of Practice in Energy Systems at the University of Strathclyde. Eric has a wealth of experience in the energy sector, having been the former Chief Technology Officer at the Energy Systems Catapult and currently an Executive Adviser for them.
Prof. Álvaro Sánchez-Miralles
Chief Executive Officer, Stemy Energy
Álvaro has dedicated his career to research and development in the energy sector. He is driven to promote energy transition by empowering energy citizens towards a sustainable and just energy model.
Simon Pearson
Business Leader for Digital and Data at the Energy Systems Catapult (ESC)
An experienced senior technologist with a background in Telecoms, ICT and the Smart Energy sector, Simon’s team provides strategic insight to inform the energy sector’s digitalisation strategy as a critical part of the transition to a net zero system.
Dr Alastair Martin
Founder and Chief Strategy Officer, Flexitricity
Alastair is a professional energy engineer with over 26 years of experience in the energy industry. He founded the first Demand Side Response (DSR) business in Great Britain in 2004.
Teodora Kaneva
Programme Manager, Smart Infrastructure and Systems, TechUK
Teodora’s rich background varies from working in business development for a renewable energy lobbying association in Brussels to the fast moving technology innovation startup scene in the UK.
Kate Garth
Senior Regulatory Affairs Manager UK & Ireland, RWE Renewables UK
With over 20 years’ industry experience, Kate leads RWE Renewable’s regulatory and policy development for ancillary services, capacity market and system integration in the UK electricity market, and provides E2E regulatory support for the Irish market.
Andy Hadland
Chief Product Officer, ARENKO Group
Andy’s role focuses on creating a world leading AI platform that solves urgent industry problems for now and in the future. He guest lectures at Imperial College Energy Futures Lab on topics such as energy storage, thermodynamics and electric vehicles.
JoJo Hubbard
COO, Electron
JoJo ran the first multi-asset project financing deal in the anaerobic digestion space, before moving to the investment side with a focus on cleantech and software as a service. She also worked as a consultant focusing on energy efficiency and innovation.
James Houlton
Director Energy & Utilities, Mesh-AI
James has more than 20 years’ experience in the energy and utilities sector working across electricity, gas and water across the value chain for organisations such as National Grid, Cadent Gas and E.ON. James also brings more than five years’ experience focusing on innovation, technology and cultural change with Amazon and latterly on data, AI and machine learning technologies with Mesh-AI.
Chris Dent
Professor of Industrial Mathematics, University of Edinburgh
Chris has worked on a range of research and innovation projects in system operation and planning, including control room algorithms and the GB Capacity Market. He is a Turing Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute (the UK institute for Data Science and AI).
David Sykes
Data Scientist, Octopus Energy
David leads the Data Science and Analytics team, managing the cloud-based data engineering, analytics and machine learning capabilities of Octopus’s Kraken platform to forecast customer behaviour and help to optimise hedging, pricing and operations.
Alex Waslin
Technology Portfolio Manager - Systems Integration, bp
Alex is responsible for technology leadership and development of central engineering solutions for the Hydrogen and Carbon Capture/Storage portfolio to support bp’s ambition of transitioning to a low carbon energy world.
Jim McOmish
Head of Expert Challenge, RIIO-T3 Programme, SP Energy Networks (SPEN)
Jim’s wide-ranging 34-year career with SPEN has included senior leadership roles such as Chief Engineer (Distribution) and Head of Whole Systems and Market Development (Transmission & Distribution).
Fred Drewitt
Head of System Integration and Flex Tech, Shell Energy
Fred leads the development of flexible power systems and asset technology at Shell globally, bringing 13 years of B2B energy industry experience across several European markets. He was formally Chief Technology Officer at Limejump, a leading Virtual Power Platform (VPP) in the GB market.
Anthony Riding
Chief Enterprise Architect, Elexon
Anthony has more than 25 years’ experience working in technology. Anthony is currently Chief Enterprise Architect at Elexon. In this role he has overseen the design of Elexon's Kinnect platform and other data and technology initiatives.
