Accelerating electricity transmission to deliver net zero

To achieve a net-zero energy system in Great Britain by 2050, we need to ensure the country has the infrastructure to transport clean energy from where it’s generated to where it’s needed, powering our homes, businesses and transport networks.

In August 2023, the Electricity Networks Commissioner, Nick Winser CBE, published a report detailing 43 recommendations intended to halve the build time of transmission infrastructure. Of the recommendations assigned to NESO, four are focused on improving outage planning — a critical measure to ensure seamless system access and efficient network operation.

These recommendations involve adopting a longer-term approach to access planning, optimising network access phasing, mitigating risks to increase system access, and realising cost benefits through alternative delivery methods.

What actions have we taken?

We’ve partnered with the onshore Transmission Owners to bring these proposals to life. Together, we’ve initiated four distinct workstreams targeting each outage planning recommendation. These initiatives, outlined in our Transmission Acceleration Paper, will refine processes, enhance governance, improve data exchanges and increase transparency.
