Supporting our colleagues and charities during COVID-19 – Midland Langar Seva Society

We’re continuing to support colleagues who are involved in community-based organisations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

MLSS are an organisation that strives to help the those in need around the UK.  The charity was established in October 2013 in Walsall. It provides hot food to those living on the street, schools, safe houses and those on the poverty line. They help and support all people regardless of social status. 

 Langar is the term used in the Sikh religion or in Punjab for a canteen where food is served for free.

MLSS distributes around 45,000 meals per month across 26 UK locations, with over 500 service volunteers.It’s one of the largest homeless charities in the UK.

The food served is vegetarian, so it caters for all people from all backgrounds. Along with sustenance, MLSS distributes clothes, blankets, footwear, winter wear and hygiene products.

Our Business Reporting Analyst Harkamal Ubhi made the application on behalf of MLSS. Harkamal lives close to the organisation and has supported many of their activities:

I have been volunteering with charities for many years now and have been really inspired by the work being done by Midland Langar Seva Society (MLSS). They have strived to help so many people in the UK and gone from strength to strength. They are supported by many organisations in the UK and have achieved several accolades for the work they do. Their support extends to other initiatives such as period poverty, veteran support, children’s breakfast clubs, women’s shelters, Christmas shoebox, in 26 city locations in the UK and also abroad. They have 400 volunteers from all walks of life and growing. Their passion, commitment and generosity is truly remarkable.

I recently set-up my own fundraiser to support their work managing to raise over £1,300 for the charity so far, and my daughter also helped me by raising £181 from cake treat boxes.

COVID-19 challenges

 Like many charities MLSS relies on the generous donations of companies and members of the public. Throughout the the pandemic they’ve been called on to help more than ever before and every donation is vital to them.

We were delighted to be able to support MLSS in the West Midlands. The money will be used to support their day to day activities and to buy hand sanitiser, toilet paper wet wipes, disposable gloves, face masks, pasta, pasta sauce, dry tinned food and dry vegetarian food.

They have even created new initiatives such as school breakfast clubs, women refuge centres, Army Veteran support and 24-hour emergency parcel drop off. MLSS will also be looking to offer a call service to allow those alone someone to talk to, offer a friendly voice and someone to lean on at a time where we need each other the most.
