As the Electricity System Operator (ESO) for Great Britain, part of our role is to provide impartial advice to the Government and the regulator on what is required to securely accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels.

On 9 July, we were asked to provide advice to the Government on decarbonising the power system as part of the newly announced Mission Control for clean power by 2030.

Our Chief Executive Officer, Fintan Slye, said:

“I am excited to work with the Secretary of State on the blueprint for the future of our power system.”

I also look forward to working with industry and stakeholders across Great Britain as we undertake this critical analysis.”

We’re now establishing a programme to deliver this analysis. We’re working closely with the Government to ensure the relevant stakeholders are engaged with, and views are sought from across energy industry and beyond.

As well as advising the Government of decarbonising the power system by 2030, we’re also continuing to work towards becoming the National Energy System Operator (NESO) in 2024.

As NESO, we’ll be the independent, public corporation responsible for planning Britain’s electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system. It is our priority to ensure Britain’s energy system is secure and affordable as well as forging the path to a sustainable future for everyone.
