Celebrating International Women’s Day 2020

With International Women’s Day coming up on Sunday, we’re celebrating the women who are leading the way at National Grid ESO.
We’ve had a lot to celebrate, starting with this week’s appointment of Roisin Quinn, Head of Control Centre, as the ESO’s chief engineer. She’s a great role model – a mum of two and (we think) the first woman in the world to head up a system operator’s control room.
Ro is one of six female leaders on the nine strong ESO executive leadership team, all of whom we’re proud to say are blazing a trail for women at the heart of our organisation.
We spoke with a few of these inspiring women to find out what motivates them and what they love about working at the ESO. Senior HR business partner Huma Ali said it was the “sheer sense of purpose and passion” at the ESO that she liked most about the company – and that the advice she’d give to her younger self would be to “challenge bias when you see it”.
For Janet Morrow, head of corporate affairs, “the central role we play in tackling climate change” is what she values most about working here. Among her proudest moments is “being given the opportunity to create a new ESO corporate affairs team”.
Legal business partner Zoe Morrissey said that rather than having a single female role model, she was inspired by many women she came across. To Zoe, feeling like she can make a difference and positively change the energy industry is one of the best things about working here at the ESO.
